iMAGENATION for Animations and Video

More Websites are using animation and video for their presentations and splash pages. Instagram, by allowing for a Twitter like 7 seconds of video commentary, has confirmed that both animation and video have momentum. But there is also some dangers when using animations and videos.

Animation Challenge

First, the animation world is still in turmoil over the Great Reality Distortion inflicted on animators when Steve Jobs declared Flash to be Trash – unjustifiably. Tim Cook has still not a)provided an Apple software substitute for Flash [both QuickTime and Adobe iBook APIs certainly do not qualify]  nor b)has rescinded the unjustified ban of Flash on iOS and therefore the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Neither have the Canvas, SVG, jQuery/JavaScript and CSS3 animation implementations come close to the versatility, features and storage efficiency of Flash.

In short, animation is a software mess. One group quietly continues to develop Flash animations and then in jQuery-like IE-Hack fashion  provides AIR or Javascript workarounds for iOS targeted apps. Another group clings to GIF Animations. And finally there is a designer community using  one of the JavaScript solutions. Our team currently uses the latter two animation solutions.

Video Challenges

Video is everywhere – and why not? Every smartphone worth its salt can produce 720P if not 1080P videos with reasonable quality frames. Ditto for compact and SLR cameras that add zoom lensing, directed mikes, image stabilization, and a  broader range of recording options and lowlight performance.

The following are some examples of  our animation and video work. Click on a tab to see what we can do for your website in animation and video work.

GIF Animations can be surprisingly effective; however, they quickly become very expensive in filesize terms. For example the following 4 image header animation is 300KB.

But just add two more images and do a simple fade in transition and the GIF file balloons to almost 2MB in size. In addition, GIF files have a much more restricted color gamut as can be seen in the fine-grains of color above So GIF animations have to be used with caution in Web development.

This appears as a stand alone page and as part of the PicsofCanada website showing the versatility that is possible. Being able to highlight your products or art works yet have the option for captioning plus embedded links to an eCommerce cart or detailed specs page will help to sell your works. Even more so because these presentation sliders adapt and resize themselves for tablets and mobile phone screens as well as PCs.
[/tab] [tab name=”Video Shows”] It is so easy to take  quality silent  movies today with your choice of smartphone, compact camera, video or DSLR camera. Add a tripod  and directional microphone and those videos will become high quality videos. But more so than still images, videos can be improved dramatically by post processing.

iMAGENATION has  monopod, tripod and directional microphones for taking high quality videos. But just as important is the software: Adobe Premiere and After Effects plus Camtasia Studio for taking user provided clips and transforming them into engaging movies.

User supplied clips from Warkworth’s Long Lunch.

Turnaround time is typically a half day for 1 to 3 clips of total duration of less than 20 minutes.  Our fee is $30/hour. However,  sound imperfections can be fixed by a third party at $50 to 75/hour  depending on the difficulties encountered. There are special discounts for non-profits and art organizations. Animation and Video Directions

Animation took a turn for the worse when Steve Jobs unjustly trashed Flash when his own QuickTime software had even worse performance, reliability and security record than Flash. Worse while decimating  the market for millions of Apple graphic designers, Apple has not replaced Flash animations with anything of equal or better value. Yes, there are small words about HTML5, Canvas  or even CSS3 animations from Cupertino- but truly these “solutions” only encompass a fraction of  the features of Flash.

f course Adobe is not blameless; but the intense software rivalry between Apple and Aodbe contributed mightily to the down fall o

All the presentation sliders use  Web standards such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript[primarily using the jQuery Framework]. Many are free except for the time it takes to learn how to operate them well. Other presentation sliders, like their courses, cost about $100 or less. Almost all of the slider are responsive. This has two meanings – 1)it means fast response time when used on your website but 2)it also means that the slider adapts to the screen size that is being used to view the presentation slider. This is important because now more than 40% of users browse the Web using tablets or smartphones or other small screen devices.

Other Provided Services

See our iMAGENATION  for Animation and Video service if you require non-Flash animations for banners ads, Splash Pages, or special presentations. If you require Flash animation or video, we can recommend some designers  in the area. However, realize that Apple has adamantly refused to support Flash in its iOS used to power iPods, iPhones, and iPads except indirectly through some Adobe AIR apps.  In contrast, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone 8 all support Flash.

There are tools for doing increasingly sophisticated animations without using Flash. The trade-off is that Flash delivers features and compression that even Apple has failed to come close to matching with its Quicktime video software. So from time to time we will not take on animation/video projects truly require sophisticated or Flash-based services.

Pricing

Our rates are very competitive and are quoted on a per photofinished image basis. Presentation Sliders are priced depending on whether they are to be used standalone or installed in a website. Typically, these slider development costs range in the 4-12 manhour range depending on how many revisions/customizations are required.  Some presentation sliders have purchase costs associated with them. Finally, there are discounts available for non-profits and art organizations.
